If You Came to Visit Me, You Might See...

Fish drying on the roof of our neighbor's house.

Fish prepared in any way imaginable is a staple in the Russian diet.
Dried is one of their favorite ways to eat it. Guess you could say it is like their "jerky".

Our neighbor's son sells dried fish at the central area of our village where many people gather during the summer to sell vegetables, "fresh from the cow" milk, and other goods.

So, every week a truck delivers fresh (well, we like to think it is) fish to their house and recently he began laying it out for several days on the roof to dry before it is sold.

You don't see that everyday!

  1. The Greenlanders also eat a lot of fish and you'll see them drying all year round. The place of choice is usually the clothes line, but we've seen them tossed on the roof too!
